MSW Continues to Grow in 2009

MSW Chicago expanded its reach this year. Topics ranged from teaching kids to save, to surviving a job loss to the benefits of renewable energy vehicles. There was so much interest in financial literacy classes that a new group was formed for DuPage County and sponsored 40 events. Some of the highlights of this year's events are:

  • Almost 600 events were offered, up about 15% from 2008
  • 87,000+ people attended events in the Chicagoland area, triple last year's attendance
  • 71,000 Chicago Public School students led the way to the biggest MSW campaign ever—the Save, Chicago! Challenge from City Treasurer Stephanie Neeley
  • 3,500 kids took part in the JA in a Day events held by Junior Achievement
  • About 18 adults attended every classroom event, with several topping out with more than 50 people

There were more than 380 events for adults and almost 200 for children. Feedback from participants was very encouraging:

  • About 88% of conference survey participants said that they thought MSW is valuable
  • Almost 88% said that they will try to change their habits because of something they learned at MSW
  • 96% said they would recommend MSW events to family and friends

From Shoes to Stocks: An Update on a MSW Kid

Who would have thought that a request for MJ basketball shoes would be the beginning of Darrin Williams' investment portfolio? Williams, the 2005 Money Smart Week Kid for Chicago, asked his mom for a pair of the popular shoes when he was 6. She said that he needed to own some of the company before he could own any of their shoes. So, at age 6, he bought his first share of stock and never looked back. Today he is a Morgan Park Academy student, and the SouthtownStar tells us how he is doing 4 years after his win as MSW Kid.
