Money Smart Week Dates Set for 2010

In 2009, MSW featured events like this event for seniors featured in this video. But MSW isn't just for Mom and Dad. Events are offered all over the Iowa for kids and young adults, too. Our 2010 MSW has been set for April 17–24. Watch this site for updates on MSW 2010!

The third Money Smart Week in Iowa was another success. Nearly 100 partnering organizations sponsored events in Central Iowa, the Quad Cities and the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor. One particular highlight was Ben Franklin's tour of fifth and sixth grade classrooms in March. Ben brought along a newly created comic book, Be Money Smart to teach the kids about money and saving. Ben, our teachers, our school principals and our sponsors gave away nearly 15,000 comic books. We were able to visit 98 classrooms, libraries and events.

Money Smart Kids Named

The MSW Kid essay contest highlighted three winners. Each was awarded a College Savings Iowa account of $1,000. They spoke at the kickoff breakfast and other events in the area. The winners were:
  • Quinn Hanson Pollock, Central Iowa (center, in the picture to the right)
  • Lauren Van Speybroeck, Quad Cities (left)
  • Alec McIntosh, Cedar Rapids (right)

Highlights in Des Moines

  • More than 220 attended the MSW Women's conference at Drake University
  • Iowa JumpStart coalition held the second annual Financial Forum, hosting 50 professionals discussing financial activities to be held throughout the year
  • Shredding events were held at the Johnston Library and EdCo Credit Union and yielded nearly half a ton in shredded documents

Highlights in Cedar Rapids

  • Nearly 120 signed up to attend the first MSW Women's conference Recover, Rebuild, Proper, at Kirkwood College
  • Shredding events hosted by United Security Savings Bank and Document Destruction netted nearly 2,500 pounds in shredded documents
  • Shredding events hosted in Iowa City and at the Marion Library yielded almost a ton in shredded documents in IC and 1,212 pounds at the library

We received great feedback on all of the events. Some participants are considering further discussions throughout the year. Indications from our partners is that we can expect an even bigger and better Money Smart Week 2010!
