Payments Studies
The Chicago Fed's Payments Studies group analyzes existing payment instruments and networks, as well as the next generation of payment instruments and networks. Staff members conduct three types of analysis: academic, applied, and public policy. Through articles in Chicago Fed and professional publications, occasional papers, and conferences, Payments Studies staff share analysis with academic and industry audiences.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago will host its ninth annual payments
conference, Payments Pricing: Who Bears the Cost?, on May 14–15, 2009, at the Chicago Fed. The conference will highlight the following issues:
- Evaluating the role of public intervention;
- Comparing perspectives on market-based solutions;
- Offering incentives to affect payments behavior;
- Leveraging technology to increase competition; and
- Developing future payment pricing strategies.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago hosted its eighth payments conference on June 5–6, 2008, at the Chicago Fed. The conference highlighted threats to the security of the payments system and explored solutions to those challenges.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Chicago Metropolis 2020 co-sponsored a one-day workshop on transportation networks on June 13, 2007. The purpose of this workshop was to understand how pricing schemes, public–private partnerships and emerging payment mechanisms can be used to address congestion and efficiency in urban commuter networks. Presentations are now available.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago hosted its seventh annual payments conference, "Competitive Forces Shaping the Payments Environment: What's Next?," on May 10–11, 2007, at the Chicago Fed. The conference highlighted recent trends in the adoption of payment technologies and explored the implications of those trends.
